Orthopedic Evaluation in Holly Springs, NC

A subtle limp today can be the first sign of a joint problem that only gets harder to treat the longer it goes on. Watching a dog hesitate before jumping onto the couch or struggle to stand up after a nap is unsettling, especially when there is no obvious injury to explain it.

At Grace Animal Hospital, we know mobility changes are seldom something pets grow out of on their own. Through our orthopedic services, we work with a board-certified veterinary surgeon, so Holly Springs families do not have to be referred elsewhere to get a thorough answer about what is going on with their pet’s joints, bones, or muscles.

What Is an Orthopedic Evaluation?

An orthopedic evaluation is the entry point to orthopedic care at our clinic. It is designed to identify exactly what is causing your pet’s discomfort before any treatment is recommended.

We start with a full physical exam, checking overall body condition, muscle mass, and any areas of visible swelling or asymmetry that might point toward a specific joint or limb.

What Happens During an Orthopedic Evaluation?

Each evaluation builds from hands-on observation to imaging, so we can match the treatment plan to what is happening inside your pet’s body. Here is how a typical visit unfolds:

1
Physical Exam
We check body condition, muscle mass, swelling, and asymmetry.
2
Gait Analysis
We watch how your pet walks, trots, sits, and rises to see which limb is favored.
3
Joint Palpation
We gently move each joint to check range of motion, stability, and pain response.
4
Digital X-Rays
Our digital radiology shows fractures, degenerative changes, or malformations that touch alone cannot detect.

A dog with a torn ligament reacts very differently under our hands than one with early arthritis. According to Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, subtle changes in joint conformation can be difficult to catch on imaging alone, which is why a hands-on exam is always needed alongside diagnostic tools.

How Evaluation Results Guide the Treatment Plan

Once we have the physical exam findings, gait patterns, and imaging results in hand, we sit down with you and map out the best path forward together. You are involved in every decision about your pet’s care.

Conservative Care
For many pets, especially those with early arthritis or mild joint laxity, this is the right starting point. It may include anti-inflammatory medication, joint supplements, weight management, or activity changes, with regular rechecks.
Surgical Care
Cases such as a fully torn cruciate ligament or advanced hip dysplasia may call for surgery to restore stability and keep long-term arthritis from worsening.

Since we have surgical capabilities in-house, pets who need pet surgery do not have to wait weeks for an outside referral.

Signs It Is Time to Schedule an Evaluation

Waiting too long can allow a treatable issue to become a bigger problem. A few signs should prompt a call to our office rather than a wait-and-see approach:

Limping
Any limp lasting more than a day or two, or one that comes and goes, deserves a proper look.
Reluctance to Exercise
A pet who used to enjoy walks or play but now hangs back or tires quickly may be masking discomfort.
Struggling to Rise
Difficulty standing up after rest is a classic early sign of joint pain.

A diagnosis takes a combination of hands-on assessment and imaging working together, not one single test on its own.
